MPCC Rodeo Team piles up wins at home Stampede

The Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team made the most of its home arena, earning six event titles, a men’s team championship and all-around honors during the two MPCC Stampede rodeos in Sutherland last week. 

Kahiwa Augustiro led the way, capturing the all-around title in the opening rodeo with 252 points, highlighted by a third-place finish in bareback and a top finish in team roping alongside Laysha Cottrell. Augustiro continued his strong showing in the second rodeo, finishing fourth in bareback and second in bull riding. His consistent performances have him ranked No. 1 in the men’s all-around standings in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association.

MPCC dominated saddle bronc riding throughout the weekend. Talon Krolikowski won the event in the opening rodeo, while Leland Robertson claimed the title in the second rodeo with Krolikowski finishing second. Krolikowski is currently ranked second nationally in saddle bronc riding.

Bull riding also featured strong performances from the MPCC men. Aiden “Buzzy” Augustiro won the opening rodeo, with Brock Fry finishing second and Wyatt Davis fourth. MPCC swept the top three spots in the second rodeo, with Fry taking first, Kahiwa Augustiro second, Davis third and Aiden “Buzzy” Augustiro fifth. Davis currently ranks No. 1 nationally in bull riding.

On the women’s side, Whitney Lake earned the women’s all-around title in the second rodeo with a total of 207 points. Lake finished second in breakaway roping and posted a fifth-place finish alongside Chase Orsatelli in team roping. Bailey Sproat placed six in breakaway roping.

Other MPCC athletes earning top finishes included Stockton Stroh, who placed sixth in steer wrestling in opening rodeo; Dawson Doggett, who placed eighth in steer wrestling in the first rodeo and tenth in the second; Zach Miller, who finished fourth in tie-down roping; Evan Richter and Colten Kehano, who placed eighth in team roping; and Makamae Mendiola-Jensen, who finished seventh in barrel racing.

In the team standings, the MPCC men won the opening rodeo with 649.5 points while the women finished fifth. In the second rodeo, both the men’s and women’s teams placed second.

After three rodeos the MPCC men’s team is ranked second behind Bismarck State College in the Great Plains Region and third nationally.

The MPCC Rodeo Team will have a week off before returning to competition Oct. 2–3 at the Bismarck State College Rodeo in Mandan, North Dakota.
