A Mid-Plains Community College instructor is being honored for her commitment and contributions to higher education.

Joanna Jacobs has been selected to receive the 2026 Excellence in Teaching Award from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development.

“Joanna’s commitment to students and to quality instruction makes her incredibly deserving of this recognition,” said Dr. Jody Tomanek, vice president of academic affairs and NPCC.

Jacobs has worked at MPCC for more than 15 years and joined the faculty full-time in 2014. She teaches statistics, trigonometry and calculus.

“It really is an honor,” Jacobs said of the award. “I appreciate that my colleagues see value in what I’m doing in the classroom.”

Originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jacobs earned her undergraduate degree from University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and a master’s degree in atmospheric science from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. She moved to North Platte after her husband accepted a position with the National Weather Service.

Before becoming a full-time instructor, Jacobs worked in the MPCC Student Success Center, helping students through tutoring and testing services. She later transitioned into adjunct teaching before joining the mathematics faculty.

“I really enjoy helping students grasp concepts and connect what they’ve learned,” Jacobs said. “I’m always trying new ways to help students learn best.”

Known for her dedication to student success, Jacobs inspires students to stay curious, open-minded and encourages lifelong learning.

“You don’t always know where you’re going to land,” she said. “Take an interest in what you’re studying and never stop learning.”

Outside the classroom, Jacobs enjoys reading, attending concerts, learning new languages and teaching herself guitar.

Jacobs will be honored at a dinner and celebration during the NISOD International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence in Austin, Texas later this month.
