Men’s rodeo team claims Great Plains Region crown at Cornhusker Rodeo

Lincoln, Neb. – The No. 4 Mid-Plains Community College men’s rodeo team secured the Great Plains Region crown following the Cornhusker College Rodeo in Lincoln on Saturday.
The men’s team claimed the team title behind first place performances from Koy McAllister, Jace Richter and Kahiwa Augustiro. The women’s team closed out the spring season with a fourth place finish.
Kahiwa Augustiro made program history by becoming the first three-time men’s all-around champion. He earned the title with a first place finish in team roping alongside Richter, a second place showing in bull riding and a fourth place finish in bareback.
McAllister continued his strong season with a first place finish in saddle bronc, solidifying his position atop the region standings. Teammate Jackson Lunn added a second place finish in bareback riding, while Matt Miller placed third in tie down roping.
On the women’s side, Laynee Ohm led the way with a pair of third place finishes in goat tying and breakaway to finish tied for third in the all-around standings. Ka’ehu Dejesus-Beaudet matched Ohm with a third place finish in breakaway, and Samantha Gerlach added a sixth place finish in barrel racing.
Additional honors highlighted the weekend, as Aukai Kaai was once again named Great Plains Region Coach of the Year.
With the regular season complete, the teams now turn their attention to the College National Finals Rodeo, set for June 14-20 in Casper, Wyo. MPCC has qualified nine student-athletes in eleven events, including Kahiwa Augustiro (bareback riding and team roping), Koy McAllister (saddle bronc), Jackson Lunn (bareback riding), Trace Scarlavai (bull riding), Wyatt Davis (bull riding), Matt Miller (tie down roping), Jace Richter (team roping), Whitney Jennings (breakaway) and Laynee Ohm (breakaway and goat tying).
