MCC’s ‘Mermaid Tales’ opens Friday at the Yard

McCook Community College Theater Department will present the third in a series of swashbuckling shows this weekend with “Lies, Gales and Mermaid Tales….” Its two-week run opens Friday at the Yard & Loop Brewing Co. Taproom in McCook.

Performances will be at the Yard (801 West C, Suite 5B, McCook) Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 6 p.m. It continues April 19 and 20 at 7 p.m. and April 21 at 6 p.m. You can buy tickets at The Yard & Loop Brewing Company Taproom (tickettailor.com)

This is the third swashbuckling performance directed by MCC Theater Instructor Mark Hardiman.

“Lies Gales and Mermaid Tales…” is the story of pirates and sailors stuck in a magical island inhabited by Calypso, the Greek Goddess famous for trapping Odysseus in the Odyssey. She does the same in a pub on a mystical island. She stipulates that the sailors that entertain her best with exciting stories of the sea get to go free.

Those attending are encouraged to attend dressed like a pirate for a nightly costume contest. Following the show the winners will be announced and receive a little treasure from the Loop, a swashbucklin’ lesson with “Capn’ Mark” usin’ cutlasses and yarrs, and pirate talkin’ lessons from August Roy, the show’s pirate interpreter and dialect designer.
