Cookies, cakes and other goodies will be available to purchase during a bake sale Monday hosted by MPCC nursing students. Proceeds from the sale will help the students travel to educational activities this spring.

Nursing students at Mid-Plains Community College will host a bake sale Monday in North Platte to help offset the cost of travel expenses for upcoming conferences.

The sale will be set up in two locations from 8 a.m. to noon. Items will be available to purchase in the lobby of the Health and Science Center on the college's south campus and in front of the Welcome Center on the north campus.

"We are raising money to help fund our LPN and RN student trips to several learning opportunities," said Lana Albrecht-Watson, nurse educator. "Those include Nurses Day at the Legislature on Feb. 28 in Lincoln, the Nebraska State Student Nurses Association annual state convention in Gering on Feb. 16 and the National Student Nurses' Association Annual Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah the first week of April."

The 2019 Nurses Day at the Legislature theme is, "Back to the Future: Advocacy for All Nurses." Among other things, students will learn how state policy affects nursing practice. Speakers will review the advanced practice registered nurse consensus model, provide an update on Medicaid expansion and discuss how advocacy equals perseverance.

"We will also hear from our Nebraska lobbyist about legislation under consideration and the newly elected NNA president on the importance of nurses getting involved and strategies to make an impact," said Albrecht-Watson. "Students will eat lunch with their state senators and VIP guests and talk to them about healthcare issues. Students will also get the opportunity to tour the state capital - something many have never had the opportunity to do."

The NSNA Annual Convention in Salt Lake attracts thousands of nursing students, faculty and nursing leaders from across the country. It features speakers, an exhibit hall, an opening-night party, focus sessions, an awards ceremony, a mini-NCLEX® review, a live auction and many networking opportunities. School and state chapters are represented in the House of Delegates where resolutions are debated and leaders are elected.

The annual NSNA Convention in Gering allows members to apply for state office, receive awards individually and for their organization, network, listen to award winning speakers and attend focus sessions.

MPCC has two state officers who will attend the state convention in Gering and represent the college's nursing program.
