What's New in Emergency Medical Services
Bowlin honored for impacting EMS education
A Mid-Plains Community College instructor has been honored for making a difference in the world of emergency medical services.
Karen Bowlin, EMS/CPR coordinator for MPCC, received the Greg Chamberlain EMS Impact Award on Saturday during the 37th annual Nebraska Statewide EMS Conference in Kearney.
Progress at NPCC leads to expansion
North Platte Community College has had many homes over the years. Growth in its program offerings, technology and number of employees as well as in the demand for particular courses has led NPCC to spread out its operations across two campuses.
Today, health occupations, business and academic transfer-related classes are housed on the South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Road, while heavy technical programs are on the North Campus, 1101 Halligan Drive.
The Paramedic Program is designed to provide training and education to develop competent Paramedics. The Paramedic provides care to emergency patients in an out-of-hospital setting. The emerging roles and responsibilities of the Paramedic also include public education, health promotion and participation in injury and illness prevention programs, as well as providing initial treatment.
The course of study is designed to enhance all facets of the Paramedic’s scope of practice. Completion of the entire sequence of classes would lead to an Associate of Applied Science degree in Emergency Medical Services. Completion of the specialized advanced emergency medical courses would lead to a diploma. The EMT - Paramedic Program course of study taught at McCook Community College in McCook and North Platte Community College in North Platte is designed to enhance all facets of the EMT - Paramedic's scope of practice.
The college offers two distinct and separate tracts of instruction. A concentrated 12-week Accelerated EMT-Paramedic program is offered at McCook Community College three times per year. Click here for more information about the Accelerated EMT-Paramedic Program . The traditional training is focused on the part-time non-traditional student. The didactic training is presented in two evening-four hour class sessions per week over an 18-month period. Students are then given up to 12 months to complete their clinical and field training at participating facilities and Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Once all training is completed, the student is permitted to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians which administers the certifying exam of Emergency Medical Technicians.
MPCC continues to offer both versions of the Paramedic training to remain a leader in meeting the ongoing demands of the emergency medical profession.
The Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic program is accredited by CAAHEP – the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs with oversight from CoAEMSP – the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Profession.
