WHAT IS COMPASS?
ACT Compass® is an untimed, computerized placement test of your reading, writing, and math skills.
The computer selects questions for you on the basis of your answers to previous questions. Compass is “user friendly,” so no extensive experience with computers is needed. You will receive your score report immediately after completing the test and MPCC staff will explain the report to you. Most Nebraska community colleges accept ACT Compass scores for course placement.
WHY TAKE THE PLACEMENT TESTS?
A placement test can measure your current skill level in areas such as math, writing, and reading. Upon completion of testing, your score report will print, including placement messages, informing you what courses you should begin taking. You give your academic career a boost by registering for courses that most closely match your current abilities!
Placement testing is especially important for those classes requiring math, extensive writing and/or reading skills.
CAN I FAIL THE COMPASS TEST?
No. Preparing for the Compass will help you find success. But relax! Compass is not a pass-fail test. Some programs require ‘cut scores’ for admission to the program of study, so inquire as to whether your plan of study is one of them.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER COMPASS?
Ask to schedule an advising appointment to set up your class schedule! Your advisor will use your Compass score report to help you register for your classes.
